What we did

The Standard Celeration Society hosts the full run of the Journal of Precision Teaching and the Journal of Precision Teaching and Celeration, 1980–2013. We downloaded every article listed in the Society's index (531 index entries, 477 PDFs; Volumes 27 and 28 are available only as full-issue PDFs). We then checked every page twice for Standard Celeration Charts and recorded what each chart shows.

What we found

  • 810 pages contain charts.
  • Chart types: 584 daily per minute, 31 weekly, 31 monthly, 36 yearly, 5 timings charts, 1 daily count per day, and 122 other formats.
  • 716 show a human learner. One shows a dog: Bailey, a Labrador puppy learning to heel (Gallagher & McLaughlin, 1996). 93 have no learner (blank charts, teaching examples, or summaries).
  • 99 charts count something other than behavior, such as the national debt, and 24 count programs or staff.
  • 29 charts count inner behavior (thoughts and feelings).
  • Some charts appear more than once. Stevens (2002) was reprinted in 2003, and Judy et al. (1997) was reprinted in 2001. Some charts were redrawn from other studies. These are tagged so no learner is counted twice.

What moved into the Atlas

  • 572 chart pages from 240 articles meet the Atlas criteria: a real Standard Celeration Chart, a learner, and counts of behavior, from one learner or a group. 563 are in the Digitize queue now. 9 are waiting to be cropped by hand.
  • 22 chart images (from 21 pages) are in Community Review because they need a second look before they are added.
  • 217 chart pages were not moved because they show no learner, do not count behavior, or are not a standard chart format.
  • Only the cropped chart is shown in the Atlas. Full articles stay at celeration.org.

How the numbers get made

Volunteers mark each data point on the Digitize page. A chart's values are recorded only after two volunteers' submissions agree. Each chart keeps its citation and page. Some early scans are faint, and those are flagged.

Every chart page we found, with citation, page, chart type, learner, what was counted, and whether it moved into the Atlas.

Thanks

To the Standard Celeration Society for keeping the journal archive open, and to the authors and learners whose charts make this possible.
